The language of color
I’ve been enjoying the wide blue Colorado sky today as I’ve gone about my errands. There’s something about that particular shade of blue that Colorado skies seem to have the patent on. I love Eva Cassidy’s version of the song “Blue Skies” - some days I find myself humming it in the background as I go about my business, especially on these blue-skied days.
Today’s business was building a flower arrangement for an office lobby that I take care of weekly., that’s the picture I attached to this blog post. Sometimes I am aware of an upcoming holiday and I let that guide my color choice, other times a color jumps out with it’s arms up saying ‘Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!”. Today the color Yellow had me at hello.
I don’t know what it was exactly - I realized I had a big grin on my face when I came upon the tulip section of the wholesaler’s cooler and saw buckets and buckets of Yellow Tulips. There were other colors too - Peach, Orange, Red, Dusty Pink, White, Purple, but there was something about Yellow that simply demanded the spotlight. I thought maybe I should do a contrasting color to pair with those bright yellow tulips, but nope, Yellow kept saying that today was it’s day. So Yellow it is - Tulips, Calla Lilies, Crespedia, and a dash of Straw Flower. Yum.
I find that different days, and different moments, colors can have different things to say. Purple can sound Regal and Magestic, and then in another conversation it can speak of Love and Friendship. Blue can tell storeis of Hopefulness and Happiness, while sometimes the darker shades speak of Secrets and Sorrow. Pink evokes Childhood, Fun and Power. Yellow? Today Yellow talked to me about Growth, New Seasons, Joy and Strength.
